When SketchUp Pro 2019 Full Version was released, it definitely caught the eye of architects and CAD professionals everywhere. Honestly, though, from my experience, this version didn’t really change the core workflow that much. If you have the budget, I’d suggest putting that money towards powerful plugins, such as Transmutr, various Fredo tools, WrapR, or the instant modelling features of ValiArchitect.

However, there is one standout new feature that’s genuinely important: the Dashed Line tool. This was one of the most-requested features for years, and it finally arrived in SketchUp, but it took nearly a decade.

Regarding Layout, users seem to fall into two camps: those who do actual 2D drafting in it and those, like me, who use it primarily to document 3D models. For my workflow, 2D drafting in Layout still feels too slow compared to dedicated CAD software.

My current pipeline involves taking models from SketchUp into Unreal Engine for VR using Datasmith, which works well but requires some extra setup. Other additions I appreciated include better Trimble Cloud integration and updates to the 3D Warehouse library.

In terms of raw capability, this software remains powerful. You can export 3D models to various CAD formats, including PDF and DWG. A key point is that it officially only supports 64-bit versions of Windows 10 and newer. Trimble doesn’t recommend running it on Windows 7 or 8, especially not 32-bit systems. For those on older systems, you might consider trying Sketchup Pro 2015 (32-bit).

SketchUp Pro 2019 or Another Alternative Application?

I personally have a soft spot for SketchUp. In my office, most of the team uses a mix of SketchUp Pro, TurboCAD Pro, ArchiCAD, and BricsCAD Mechanical. Some also use AutoCAD OEM. But when it comes to the primary daily workflow, about 99% of the people here rely on BricsCAD.

Its ability to handle modeling, add 3D parametrics and constraints, and then build assemblies from the top down is genuinely impressive. If you need a capable SketchUp alternative, BricsCAD is a strong answer.
